Will I be able to find the materials I need in my country?
I can’t guarantee it, but it is very likely yes. As long as you can find some kind of modelling paste/molding paste/texture paste and acrylic paint you will be able to do the course. These are very common art materials so should not be difficult to attain. The brands I recommend are just that, recommendations, the techniques can still work perfectly well with others. The tools are also standard basic art tools and should be available in any art stores.
Is this an online course? How does it work?
Yes, it is an online course. You can access it from any country, the lessons are pre-recorded so you can work through them in your own time in whatever time zone you may be in!
Do I need a lot of space and expensive materials to do this course?
You don’t need a huge amount of space, you can even get started with a coffee table or a corner of the living room floor like I did!
You also do not need a lot of expensive materials or tools. The beauty of textured art is that you can use almost anything to create texture; kitchen utensils, cardboard, cleaning or garden tools, twigs, brushes, all sorts that are cheap or free!
What if I’m really bad at art, can I still do this?
Anyone can make art. Some people are naturally more adept at certain fine motor skills like drawing, but that doesn’t mean if you aren’t you shouldn’t make art, or that there won’t be other techniques that suit you. True art isn’t about how neatly you can paint, but about expressing your heart, your soul, your thoughts and opinions. Anyone can learn to do that. Not to mention artists practice. You only see the finished pieces, not all the experimenting and practicing they do in-between.
This is why one of the lessons is mark making and experimentation, to allow you to find your own way to make art, to express yourselves. So don’t let the false idea of being “bad at art’ stop you!
Where can I progress after this? Can I really make it my job?
Absolutely! Although my artwork is made predominantly with plaster now, I made my start with modelling paste, when I was exploring the world of texture while at university. I used it to create the original artwork that started my signature collection and shaped my whole artistic future. Many people never even need to progress from modelling paste, and I have several artist friends currently making very good careers creating textured artwork with it. I also use it alongside plaster in a lot of my professional work.
If however, you end up hungry for more like I did, if you want to be able to make deeper textures without support structures, or have a much larger variety of textures then plaster will be a great medium for you. At which point, my Ultimate Plaster Class will be the perfect progression.
